League Week 2

Curriculum & Tips for 5&6’s

Ask for big high fives when welcoming each child to the field!

To keep the kids focused on you, try to be the most interesting & exciting thing on the field! Make transitions more exciting and set expectations for the kids by narrating what you’re doing.

Environment Tip:

5&6’s Week 2 Curriculum

Increase the challenge slightly when reviewing the skill from the previous week. Introduce the new skill of the week.

5&6’s Skills

5&6’s Games

Traditional. In this approach, the kids play 4 v 4 soccer with one ball for the entire field for two 12-15 minute halves.

The role of the coach during the game is to be high energy, offer praise and congratulations to the kids for trying new things and progress their development. Remind the kids during the scrimmage to use only their feet, to watch out for their friends and the other team. Have an extra ball in hand to use if the ball on the field goes out of bounds.

The successful coach will incorporate a “volunteer cheer zone helper” to help with substitutions and explaining the game to ensure that the majority of time is spent with the kids playing.

5&6’s Scrimmage Type

Scoring, which goal? Remind them which goal they should score in and which goal they should protect.

Keep Away/Take Away. Help the kids understand that in a traditional soccer game there is only one ball, so they have to take the ball from the other team in order to help their team keep the ball and score goals.

5&6’s Tactical Goals

UPside Skill: Perseverance. To teach perseverance, encourage the kids to keep trying even after initial failure. For example, if they miss a shot on goal, remind them that we never give up, even when things are hard. Always encourage kids to try again when they fail at a task. When introducing difficult skills, have the kids shout out “Never give up!” to motivate them to keep practicing.
