League Week 5
Curriculum & Tips for 3’s
Use each kid’s name at LEAST 3 times during the session. This helps you learn their names, helps keep them engaged, and creates moments of connection between you and the kids.
Environment Tip:
Week 5 begins the 3rd stage of the 3’s curriculum. The kids move from the All Get A Ball scrimmage type to the 4v4 Traditional scrimmage type.

Traditional. In this approach we ask the parents to find a comfortable spot on the sidelines to allow their kiddos to give it a try all by themselves. We then have each team meet at their assigned goal with their soccer ball where we explain the goal of the game.
Each child has their own ball to dribble from their goal to the other goal and score. After they score they stay in the goal in which they scored until all the kids finish. The kids repeat the game, heading back to the goal in which they started to play again, 3-4 times.
The role of the coach in this approach is to provide a high level of energy, communication, and encouragement to the kids. Encourage the kids to keep their heads up, only use their feet and to be aware of the other team so they don’t run into them on their way to score. Also encourage proper dribbling and ball striking technique while giving loads of praise and high fives as the kids score.
3’s Scrimmage Type
Only 1 ball! Help the kids understand that in a traditional soccer game we only use one ball, which means we have to share the ball with our teammates while also trying to keep the other team from taking the ball away.
3’s Tactical Goals
UPside Skill: Perseverance. To teach perseverance, encourage the kids to keep trying even after initial failure. For example, if they miss a shot on goal, remind them that we never give up, even when things are hard. Always encourage kids to try again when they fail at a task. When introducing difficult skills, have the kids shout out “Never give up!” to motivate them to keep practicing.
