Medal Day is coming up fast! Start thinking of what each child can be proud of this season so you are prepared to pass out medals the following week. At the end of the session, remind parents and participants what we have to look forward to next week!
League Week 5
Curriculum & Tips for 4&5’s
Use each kid’s name at LEAST 3 times during the session. This helps you learn their names, helps keep them engaged, and creates moments of connection between you and the kids.

Continue building on the skills learned in previous weeks and introducing new skills & games each week.
4&5’s Skills
4&5’s Games
Traditional. In this approach, the kids play 4 v 4 soccer with one ball for the entire field for two 12-15 minute halves.
The role of the coach during the game is to be high energy, offer praise and congratulations to the kids for trying new things and progress their development. Remind the kids during the scrimmage to use only their feet, to watch out for their friends and the other team. Have an extra ball in hand to use if the ball on the field goes out of bounds.
The successful coach will incorporate a “volunteer cheer zone helper” to help with substitutions and explaining the game to ensure that the majority of time is spent with the kids playing.
4&5’s Scrimmage Type
Attacking & Defending. Help the kids understand the roles you can have on a soccer team, offense and defense. Offense works on scoring goals, while defense works to protect the goal. Assign a few kids to each role, making sure to switch so everyone gets a chance to play in both roles.
4&5’s Tactical Goals
UPside Skill: Perseverance. To teach perseverance, encourage the kids to keep trying even after initial failure. For example, if they miss a shot on goal, remind them that we never give up, even when things are hard. Always encourage kids to try again when they fail at a task. When introducing difficult skills, have the kids shout out “Never give up!” to motivate them to keep practicing.
