Curriculum & Tips for 3’s
Ask the kids to score goals with you before the session starts! This builds their confidence and comfort with you on the field.
Environment Tip:
To keep the kids focused on you, try to be the most interesting & exciting thing on the field! Make transitions more exciting and set expectations for the kids by narrating what you’re doing.
3’s Week 3 Curriculum
By week 3, the 3’s are ready to move on to Stage 2 of their curriculum. Introduce new games and skills energetically & with enthusiasm!
3’s Skills
3’s Games
Multi-Ball. In this approach, you will divide the kids into two teams and have them stand in front of a goal. Place multiple balls throughout the space and explain to the children that they have to find a ball and kick it into the other goal. Explain that the other team is trying to do the same thing, so they have to move quick to get to a soccer ball before anyone else.
The concept of “stealing” the ball is the main reason for this transition process, as it is important to note how overwhelming and scary it can be to kids. Try to identify the kids who may have a hard time with this new concept initially and provide the necessary support.
This approach starts with 4-6 balls. Once all balls are scored, encourage the kids to run back to their own goals to play again. As the kids become comfortable with this game type, reduce the number of balls until there is only one ball for the entire field. This transitions the kids to the Traditional scrimmage type.
The role of the coach is to encourage the kids to go and try and get the ball, to pass to their teammates, and to identify to them that it’s okay when/if the other kiddos get the ball from them and that now it’s their turn to try and get it back.
3’s Scrimmage Type
Kick Off At Midfield. Help the kids understand and practice kicking off at midfield like in a traditional soccer game. To accomplish this while playing Multi Ball scrimmage type, place the soccer balls on the midfield line and explain to the kids that this is where the soccer ball starts off during soccer games.
3’s Tactical Goals
UPside Skill: Teamwork. To teach teamwork, encourage the kids to work together during games and the scrimmage. Encourage them to help each other, share and listen closely when other teammates are talking. You can reinforce the UPside skill throughout the session by reminding the kids what team they’re on and asking them how they can help their teammates.
